I saw this picture above, quite some time ago. It sums up the annoyance I have about dressing up and wearing costumes. Why is it that if you’re female and you want to buy a costume, it has to be sexy?
Now I’m not trying to offend anyone who reads my blog, but if I want to wear a costume, its unlikely I want to dress
like a slut, sorry sexy. Yes of course we all want to look nice, no matter how we’re dressing up, but not all of us think sexy is the main criteria for an outfit. I am thirty three years old, I have two young children and I currently weigh around twelve stone. I don’t have huge amounts of self esteem and I’m incredibly body conscious. You rarely find me in photos but at the same time I will have them taken so as to be part of memories.
Last year my friends and I took part in approximately one murder mystery party per month. We all love them, love to dress up and its a great excuse to all get together. Majority of costumes do not require a specific character or look, so you can put various items of clothes together to make your outfit. However for both halloween and this forthcoming murder mystery, I have struggled to find a costume that isn’t “sexy”.
For my partner’s birthday on 20th March, we’re hosting an Alice in Wonderland Murder Mystery on Friday 22nd. My part is the Queen of Hearts. My first go to for a costume, was of course Ebay. This is pretty much what I found, or at least the majority of what I found…
While these costumes aren’t completely outragious, they are all too short, too tight and probably too expensive for a one night only experience. Who really wants to pay £20+ for something like this?
One of my best friends gave me the idea (because she was doing it) to get something that could be reused and worn on just a regular basis. So a new search began and all these beautiful dresses came up…
Now don’t get me wrong, the first two of these are quite expensive also, but at least they are re-wearable. They’re not personally my style but I can appreciate that they are beautiful dresses. The third one I added as sort of a personal joke (because Carly Rae Jepson wore it) but also because it is at least from Topshop… and normal.
My search even turned up this beautiful dress, if I was looking for something less red hearts and more alternative.
Again, another dress that just isn’t my style but just as suitable for the costume, but much more practical than a horrible tacky purpose made costume that costs an arm and a leg (perhaps more appropriately, an arm and a “off with her head!”)
All these dresses were around £20-£30 and would be much nicer alternatives to one of these costumes sold as “Queen of Hearts”. Because lets be fair, even the more decent, long and sensible costumes, are still incredibly expensive for cheap material and bad stitching. I have a pirate costume I bought once that ripped even as I was putting it on for the first time.
Anyway I know that mostly I was just ranting, but I also have a quick query for anyone reading my blog. The dress I have decided to go for is this:
However I want to make it a bit more “royal” and “queenish”. I’m looking to add an overskirt/bustle/cloak type aspect, but it has to not cover the back of the dress (since it has the heart, which is sort of the point of picking it).
So you know what I’m talking about, I found these pictures.
From what I can see, I can’t get just the long skirt part, without the full dress, or without it being made out of tulle (see Bustle skirt). Does anyone have any idea what I can google/search under to find this type of thing?
