As you’ll obviously know, today is a Leap Day, which comes around only once every 4 years. For some reason, on a Leap Day, it is tradition for a girl to propose to a guy – since on the whole, guys are the ones doing the proposing. However in this day and age, how accurate is that now? I woke up this morning and told my partner that despite it being Leap Day, I definitely wouldn’t be proposing. Technically I’m still married (we’ve been separated 6 years) but I really have no desire to propose – and in fact, I actually proposed the last time I got married.
My Voucher Codes made this infograph and it was published alongside an article on Gentlemen’s Gazette. It looks at how dating has changed over the years and how different it has been over the decades. For me, I remember dating from about 80’s. Not because I was dating from then (I was only born in 1979) but programs like Blind Date that were on the tv and obviously whatever else was portrayed on television too. I got my first mobile phone at 18 and I had the internet from about 17. I was definitely of the texting and online dating generation. In fact, other than school romances, several of my grown up relationships were via online dating – everything from ICQ and MSN, to OkCupid and Plenty of Fish. Having been married twice (once ending during the Facebook era), I know about “it’s complicated” and changing your Facebook status too.
Having been in a stable relationship for the last three or so years, I’m happy to report I will hopefully never ask anyone to come around for “Netflix and Chill”, plus I don’t have to deal with these “swipe” apps for dating. I’ll never do speed dating (unless for a laugh) and I’ll not have to deal with blind dates! It is funny though, as an almost 40 year old, to see how dating advice has changed even in my lifetime. I guess for those of my parents generation and even grandparents, it must seem even more bizarre!
