Perhaps you’ve vowed to quit smoking this year, or pretty much every year since you started smoking, but you just can’t seem to put down cigarettes. Instead of beating yourself up or giving it yet another unsuccessful attempt, you can make quitting smoking easier by turning to vaping.
Similar to e-cigarettes, vaping involves an electronic device that heats up e-liquid to produce a vapor. The most straightforward devices consist of a rechargeable battery, a heating element, and a refillable chamber where you put your vaping liquid.
While e-cigarettes typically come as a single, prefilled, disposable unit, vaping devices can be filled and refilled with your choice of e-liquid for use again and again. Being able to choose your own e-liquid is a big advantage of vaping over e-cigarettes, that way you can choose a quality liquid that has the least amount of chemical additives.
Why is Vaping Better than Smoking?
Vaping has huge benefits over smoking traditional cigarettes. For starters, it’s much safer. A Public Health England report pegged vaping as about 95 percent safer than smoking, mainly due to the lack of combustion.
When you light a traditional cigarette, it produces more than 4,000 chemicals that range from arsenic to DDT. Vaping uses heat instead of flame, and the only chemicals are those found in your e-liquid.
What’s in E-Liquid?
Most e-liquids consist of propylene glycol (PG), vegetable glycerin (VG), optional nicotine, and some type of flavoring. PG helps carry the flavoring while producing a throat hit. VG is responsible for adding a slightly sweet taste to e-liquid and producing hefty vapor clouds.
Any additional chemicals in e-liquid are those used for artificial flavoring – or not. Opt for a naturally flavored e-liquid, like Black Note e-juice made from real tobacco extract, and you’ll avoid unnecessary chemical additives.
So I Still Get Nicotine?
Nicotine is generally optional in your vaping liquid, with most manufacturers offering different levels that range from around 18 mg/mL to 0 mg/mL. If you’re a daily pack-a-day smoker, you’ll probably want to start with the higher levels of nicotine so you don’t suffer severe nicotine withdrawal during the transition to vaping.
If you overall goal is to quit smoking and quit vaping, you can gradually decrease the nicotine levels in your e-juice until they’re at 0 mg/mL. At that point your body will no longer depend on nicotine and it can be easier to quit both habits entirely.
What Else Do I Need to Know?
It’s incredibly difficult to simply give up a habit, any habit, unless you replace it with something else. Replacing smoking with vaping tends to work so well because the habits are similar, although vaping is the better choice.
In addition to being safer than smoking, vaping beats out traditional cigarettes because it produces little to no odor, doesn’t burn holes in your belongings, costs less, and is kinder to the environment. Vaping has already helped millions of folks quit smoking. Perhaps it can work for you, too.
