Have you ever heard of Ilumi? A fantastic company with a wide range of not only Gluten Free meals, but also nut and milk free too. Many people are actually diagnosed as being allergic to gluten in food, others are just gluten intolerant. However it is also thought that by removing the gluten and nasty allergens in food, it can also reduce bloating, give you a clearer complexion and increase energy!
So of course, when I was offered a “meal for two”, care of Ilumi, I jumped at the chance. There were 3 great menu options, but in the end I picked the Mediterranean option. It was all mailed out to me, straight to the door, so there was no need to go trekking around the shops – this is exactly how it is, when you order from them yourselves.
My package arrived really fast and it was exciting to open it up and see what was inside – even though I’d chosen my menu. There was 2 soups – Tomato & Red Pepper and Pea, Pancetta and Mint – these were the starters. There was 4 main courses – Mediterranean Style Rice with Pork & Chorizo, Spanish Style Fish Stew, Basil and Garlic Chicken Meatballs in a Tomato Sauce, and Peppery Tuscan Style Beef Stew. There were even three packets of rice and two bottles of lager!
Each packet serves one person and takes no more than 2 minutes to cook. Since there was technically two meals each, we decided to have them as two separate meals on two different days. However that was not to be the case in the end! We started out with one soup, and two meals and we shared both, plus half a bottle of beer each.
The Tomato and Red Pepper soup was delicious, but sadly of the two main courses we picked to try first, we only liked one of them. We had half a plate of rice and fish stew, plus half a plate of pork & chorizo. Neither Chris nor I liked the fish, but that was more our personal preference I’m sure. The pork and chorizo was really nice. Anyway, because we’d only ended up with half a plate of food each, we decided to heat the other meals and try those at the same time.
This time we decided to have one meal each instead of share both – though we did try each others. Chris had basil and garlic chicken meatballs, while I had peppery tuscan style beef stew – we both had rice. These were really tasty and we both enjoyed them. Sadly I wasn’t keen on the lager but Chris happily drank it. As we didn’t get around to having the other soup, I had it for lunch later in the week. It was absolutely amazing and I honestly wish I had more!
In fact… I was half way through my bowlful before I even remembered to take a picture!
If you’re on a gluten free diet, or you struggle generally with gluten – or in fact you have other allergies, Ilumi is definitely a company worth looking into. Their food is really tasty and as there isn’t much else on the market for quick meals that are gluten free, these are definitely worth a try. I’m definitely glad I gave them a try!
