Wednesday Wishlist – Disney Style Books

May 18, 2016 by Bel

I have to admit that I’m super excited about this week’s wishlist, because I’ve been working on it for absolutely ages! I don’t read half as much as I’d like to as I’m always busy sewing or blogging, but if I did, I would read ALL these books I have listed and many more. This week I wanted to show off some of the many Disney/Fairytale style books that I’ve come across over the last few months. Some I’d never heard of before and others being sequels to books I already own or have read.

Disney style books
Disney style books

Disney is one of my favourite topics ever but I love a good spin on it too. Nearly all of these books follow that idea and so hopefully if you’re the same, you’ll like the sound of a lot of these books.

Starting off with Poor Unfortunate Souls, this book has been on my wishlist for a while now. When we visited Florida last year I discovered Fairest of All and The Beast Within, both of which I regretted not buying. However for my birthday the following month, I was lucky enough to get bought both. This third book is about Ursula and honestly she is pretty much my Villain spirit animal. It’s not released yet but I would love to own this book and add it to my collection.

As Old as Time is a similar story, it’s pre-order and not released yet. However I’ve had my eye on Once Upon a Dream and A Whole New World (Chris just bought me this a few days ago) in hardback for a while (they just got released in paperback) and now spotted this Beauty and the Beast Twisted Tale coming out soon. I have yet to read any, but I plan to start AWNW this week!

The next couple of books, Unhooked and Never Never, are both Peter Pan/Hook themed books. They both appeal to me to read, though I’ve heard nothing about them other than reading the information on Amazon. There is one on the next line down called Wendy Darling (and its a Part 1 I believe) and this is the same sort of thing. They all just sound like good books. Finally on this line is a book called Fairest and its part of The Lunar Chronicles series. I currently own Cinder which is by the same author and while I haven’t read it yet, I’m told it’s really good.

On the middle line is a book called Once Again, its by the same as the Twisted Tales but I think it’s co-written. From what I can gather its two stories in one, Snow White and Sleeping Beauty. Since I mentioned Wendy Darling above, I’ll skip on to Kingdom Keepers. This is a series that I only recently discovered and have to admit I’m thoroughly enjoying. The first book, Kingdom Keepers: Disney After Dark, I actually bought for Megan for her birthday, but Lily and I ended up reading as a bedtime story. Once we’d finished, I moved onto Kingdom Keepers: Disney After Dawn. Since we only read one chapter a night, it does take quite some time to work our way through, however Lily was lucky enough to get bought the next 3-4 books for her birthday so we should have enough to keep us going for a while. This particular book I listed is a sort of spin-off series I believe, called Kingdom Keepers: The Return. Obviously we will be finishing our current series, before heading off into that one though.

Finally on the middle line is another book which I believe is co-written, by Riley Pearson (the author of The Kingdom Keepers) and Dave Barry. There are several books in this series too and again I haven’t read any of them, but given that they are by the author of The Kingdom Keepers, I would definitely give it a try.

Finally on the bottom row is a couple of cheeky additions. Return to the Isle of the Lost is a sequel book to The Isle of the Lost: A Descendants Novel. All I really know of the Descendants is the Disney movie that was on TV last year, which I watched with the kids, but I did buy this book for Lily and we haven’t got around to reading it yet. Given that the first book is good, then we’d probably want the sequel too! My next cheeky addition is actually Once Upon a Time (OUAT) related and though there were several to choose from, this one is my top pick. OUAT isn’t technically Disney but it’s pretty damn close so any book connected to the series is something I want to read.

Finally that leaves three books which I only found today as I was searching for last minute additions. I honestly know nothing about the three picks but the blurbs appealed so I threw them on. Disneylanders and The Disneyland Quest, remind me somewhat of the Kingdom Keepers style book. The last one, is Fairy Godmother themed and is part of a series, some of which Megan owns but hasn’t read yet (The Snow Queen and The Sleeping Beauty). The series is called Five Hundred Kingdoms and from what I can gather, all the books can be read independently.

So these are some of my treasure finds but I’d love to know if you have any other suggestions!

Week 14 – Monday Round-up

April 6, 2015 by Bel

This week Monday has passed me by so fast that I completely forgot to do my round up post. As I write this it’s Wednesday morning and we’re on our way to Kennedy Space Center. Since these posts are largely for my benefit, I’ll probably backdate this post to Monday anyway.

So as you probably know, we went away to Florida last week. It’s been a crazy, wonderful, exciting, hot, exhausting experience so far! However on Monday we were still at home. The girls were with their dad and Chris was at work, so I spent majority of the day sewing last minute dresses and skirts for the girls. At lunch time I headed over to Lincoln. I had parcels to post and last minute money to exchange into dollars. After that I headed to my mum’s where I would attempt to finish off the dress I was making for myself. At 6pm it was almost done but I needed to collect the girls from their dad at Grandma’s house. I lingered a while there but eventually we got away, getting the girls home and ready for bed. I spent the evening finishing off my dress and watching TV with Chris once he was home from work.

Tuesday was our last day at home so it was pretty mental. We packed, we cleaned, we shopped and I sewed some more. The day went past in a bit of a blur but Chris even fitted in a visit to his gran by the end of the day. Watching TV and sewing into the evening, Chris and I ended up awake till 2am, just so I could get everything done. We headed to bed exhausted, knowing we had to be awake again at 7am. When that time came around, we crawled out of bed and got ready for the day ahead.

Having set myself the deadline of 9.30am to leave the house, it was actually 10am when we left (I knew that would be the case though which is why my deadline was earlier than necessary). We travelled to mum’s and swapped all our bags to her car, before a last minute toilet swap and off. We headed down to London, stopping once at a services to eat our packed lunch and go to the toilet again. We then drove to the Hounslow West tube station, where we would park the car and head into London. One the tube we headed straight for Leicester Square and when we got there we located the Cinderella Exhibition. We queued for a short while before getting in and it then took around half an hour to look around. We took loads of pictures and even headed into the shop. We didn’t buy anything but a programme, but it was a nice experience to have had.

After the Exhibition we walked to Covent Garden, planning to visit the Disney Store. Unfortunately it was closed due to fire nearby and so we walked back to Leicester Square to catch the tube again. This time we got off at Gloucester Road and walked to the ASK Italian restaurant. We had dinner there and it was nice but just average really. Afterwards we caught the tube again, back to the car and then drove to the Travelodge we were staying at. After struggling to get a parking spot, we were finally there, checked in and overnight bags at the ready. Mum had her own room, so the four of us settled in for the night, watched some TV and I even sneaked a blog post in. By about 10pm we all went to sleep, knowing we would need to be up early again.

The next morning was Thursday and we all woke naturally just after 7am. I showered and got ready while the girls popped to see mum and then they got ready as well. By 8.30am we headed down for breakfast – all you can eat breakfast buffet. We filled ourselves up and then headed back to our rooms to grab our stuff. We went out to the car, loaded up and then drove to Purple Parking, for our airport parking. After sorting out the car, we unloaded our stuff, packed it into the trailer and minibus and then got on ourselves. We were driven to Heathrow airport, terminal 2, where we disembarked, grabbed our cases and headed inside! Check in was pretty easy, all done from this little self check-in machine. We got our boarding passes and luggage tags printed, before handing in our luggage and then going through security. Once in the terminal lounge, we had an hour to kill so the girls waited with mum and Chris and I took a wander around the shops. We headed back for a while, sat down and chilled out. Then at 12pm the boarding gate was announced so we all made our way there. Once there, it wasn’t very long till we actually boarded. We settled into our seats and got ready for takeoff.

Lily picked a movie out and got straight into watching it – Big Hero 6 again. Megan and mum watched it too but Chris and I watched different – mine was Mockingjay Part 1. The flight was just over 7 hours and while it was fine for the most part, Megan getting sick definitely took away from some of the enjoyment. We arrived at Montreal airport at 3.20pm local time (8.20pm on our body clocks) and since it was just a layover we didn’t have to collect luggage. However we did have to go through customs and security again and this took ages. Not only that but when we finally got through, we discovered the plane was delayed. As with all things like this, you never quite know how long you’ll have to wait and in the end it was almost an hour delayed. Once we were on the plane, Megan settled in to sleep while Lily looked wide awake. Megan did manage to sleep for majority of the flight and Lily fell asleep only for the last hour.

When we landed we collected our luggage and then went to collect the rental car. The line was huge and we waited over an hour – tired and grumpy! Finally we were all sorted, got the car and were on our way. It was 45 minutes to the villa so still a good chunk to go but when we got there, we all just collapsed exhausted. We unpacked the bare minimum and fell into bed. It was midnight local time but 5am for all of our bodies!

In the morning, majority of us were awake early – around the 6/7 mark. The girls had cereal as I’d brought some for them and we’d picked up milk on the way to the villa the night before. We scrapped together a cup of tea and coffee but otherwise there was nothing else. This meant we got up and ready, heading out food shopping for some essentials. We travelled only five minutes, till we reached a Publix – all of us heading inside. Despite it being an essentials shop we bought loads of rubbish too and all in all it came out almost $200. We headed back to the villa, unpacked the shopping and then had lunch. We spent the afternoon chilling out in the pool, unpacking our suitcases and basically just relaxing. We made dinner at the villa too, the girls having sausage burgers and chips, while we had regular burgers with chips and salad. Mum and I had blue cheese burgers while Chris’ were cheese and bacon. Finally it was bed time for the girls and as they headed off to sleep, we went back out to the poolside where it was now cool. We stayed there for an hour or so before finally calling it a night and heading to bed.

On Saturday the plan was to lay in as long as possible but I was awake for 6.30am. I headed for my computer and sorted out some photos and even the odd blog post for Twice the Mum. Everyone woke up bit by bit and we all had breakfast and tea/coffee. We were supposed to be meeting up with one of my friends at midday but they messaged to say they were ill and so this changed our plans. We’d had a lazy morning and we grabbed an early lunch before heading off to Magic Kingdom. It took just over half an hour to get there, then park, catch a tram, catch a monorail, go through bag check and finally use our tickets to get in. Megan’s ticket flagged up an error so we needed to sort that out and Megan got issued a new one. We then headed into the park, I was perhaps the most excited! We went into the Theater and had our Meet and Greet with Tinker Bell. We then queued to see Marie and then sat to wait for the parade which was about to start. First came the special Easter parade and next was the main Festival of Fantasy parade. The main one was awesome any my favourite part was the fire breathing Maleficent float.

Next we signed up for Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom, an interactive card game that you play around the park. We did the first portal but then we had to head off into Adventureland as we had FastPasses booked for the Magic Carpet ride. It only took a few minutes to ride and afterwards we headed onto the Jungle Cruise. Next came a Meet and Greet with Peter Pan and this was my most favourite bit by far, so far. Next we wandered around the Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse and then around a few shops. We headed back towards Cinderella’s Castle and actually managed to catch the Move It! Shake It! Dance & Play It! Street parade. We stopped to watch this before continuing on and heading back to Main Street USA. Here we did a few more portals for our card game and defeated Cruella De Vil. We decided to leave it there and pick up on it another day. We headed out of the park and back to the car, where we drove back to the villa we’re staying in. However we were all so hungry that we stopped at the local takeaway and bought some pizza, garlic knots and chicken wings. We then rushed home to eat and relax, before getting the girls to bed and relaxing a bit before heading to bed ourselves.

Finally it was Sunday and the end of the week – though by this point we’d already lost all track of days. The plan for the day was Harry Potter in both Universal Studios and also Islands of Adventure. We headed out after breakfast and when we got to Universal Orlando we went straight for the Studios. Though it took a while to get through some of the park, we eventually made it to Harry Potter London and Diagon Alley. The girls spoke to Ernie at the Knightbus and had their picture taken outside 12 Grimmauld Place. We then headed into the shopping area of Diagon Alley, changed some money into Gringotts notes (not that I knew they existed – what happened to galleons, sickles and knuts??) and watched the street show of The Tale of the Three Brothers. We then queued up for the Gringotts ride – Escape from Gringotts – taking about 45 minutes in total. After that we went for lunch at The Leaky Cauldron and it was amazing. We tried Butterbeer in all three ways – regular, frozen and hot – as well as fish and chip, banger sandwich, lamb & beef stew and macaroni cheese. We were so stuffed afterwards!

Next we headed into Ollivanders, watched the show and both girls bought a wand. We headed out to look around all the other shops too and even made our way down Knockturn Alley. I bought an Avada Kedavra t-shirt and a Pygmy Puff key ring (to replace the one I lost when my car was stolen) and the girls bought full size Pygmy Puffs, one in pink and one in purple. Apparently the boys are pink and girls are purple so our two got named Ginny and Arnold. Next we made our way to the Hogwarts Express, via Kings Cross Station. It took a while to get on but the journey was fun, a ride in itself with story and screen on the windows and doors. Once we were off, we were in Hogmeade and of course near Hogwarts. We wandered around a little before deciding to do the Hogwarts ride – Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey. Despite the fact Lily couldn’t ride (and Chris didn’t want to) we were all allowed to queue together which meant we could all see inside. The ride was amazing though mum got off feeling sick and Megan was a little wobbly too. I would definitely recommend it to ride lovers but not for the faint hearted.

To recover ourselves we headed to The Three Broomsticks for a drink, this time including Gilly Water and Pumpkin Juice. Pumpkin Juice was disgusting but I kept the bottle as a souvenir anyway, I made a note to pick up a souvenir Butterbeer glass, the next time we had some. After another quick look around the shops, we went back to Hogsmeade station and caught the Hogwarts Express back to London. The story was different this time which was nice as well. When back at London, we were a bit lost for what to do. We needed to stay in the park for dinner in order to use our dining card but we were all still full from lunch. In the end we left mum sat on a bench with her book, while we headed into a ride called Disaster. The queue time was only 10 minutes and the ride was a lot of fun, so we were definitely glad we did it. Afterwards we headed back to mum and we were all ready to eat again. We went to Richter Burgers where we all had burgers and fries, milkshakes etc. as we had one snack left to use on our dinning card we headed back into Diagon Alley and grabbed some ice cream. We tried Butterbeer flavour amoungst others but unfortunately we were so full that no one managed all of theirs! We hung around long enough to see the dragon breathe fire at night and then we left. Everyone was tired and it was late so after eventually getting back to the villa, we all headed to bed. This ended our week, though technically we seem to be working on a Thursday to Wednesday week right now!

Please keep an eye out for the wonderful guest posts I have going live this week, as well as some scheduled wish lists and tags! I’ll hopefully remember my Monday round up post next week but I wouldn’t hold your breath as I have a busy Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday planned! Hope you’re all having a nice week – I know I am!

Week 4 – Monday Round-up

January 26, 2015 by Bel

It’s been a pretty good week. I can’t quite put my finger on why, but its definitely felt it. Perhaps every week just feels better now that I’m not working! Anyway, its been a regular sort of a week – with everyone at school and at work. Monday was normal – Chris out of the door by 7.30am and me and the girls on our way to school by 8.30am. After dropping the kids off, I headed back to Gainsborough and got the weekly shop out of the way. It was probably about 11am when I got home and then I proceeded to tidy up and get some things listed on Ebay. Majority of the day was spent on my computer, until I went to pick the kids up from school. We came home and the girls went for a bath, before getting out and having dinner. Afterwards they played on Disneyland Adventures together, until bedtime. I cooked Chris Shepherd’s Pie for dinner and made sure that was ready when he got back. I spent the evening writing a blog post and then watching TV, right up until heading to bed.

Tuesday was pretty much the same start, except that I headed straight home after dropping off the girls. I listed a few more things on Ebay and then I went up to my room to sort through some t-shirts and came up with the idea of T-shirt Tuesday. I also decided to work on some t-shirts as projects, stitching them into dresses perhaps. Anyway, it was a productive sort of a day until about lunch time when I started to get a really bad stomach ache. In the end I sat on the sofa for a while with the hope it would go and when it didn’t, I went for a bath. Sadly that didn’t help much either but once I got out, I got into my PJs and just waited for Chris or the girls to come home. When the kids got back I read a bedtime story to them and Chris came home just as we were taking our group picture, so he joined in! Luckily there was still Shepherd’s Pie left for Chris to have for dinner as I wasn’t up to making anything, but I did try to get some more work done on Olivia’s dress and Chris kept me company by playing on the Xbox.

In the middle of the night, I was awake feeling unwell. I ended up playing endless Tsum Tsum and Frozen Freefall for about 3 hours, before finally falling asleep on the sofa. I woke just before my alarm went off at 7am and before I knew it, Chris was coming downstairs. Kindly he made me a cup of tea before leaving for work and the girls got ready while I just lay on the sofa. However I ended up getting ready and taking the kids to school. After that I had to call at my mum’s to drop off Megan’s iPad and help her update her SatNav. I was there till gone midday, before heading back to Gainborough, popping to Boyes for t-shirt material and then heading home. After getting some lunch, I started to work on my t-shirt. There was exciting post in the form of my Memory Maker from Disney World and then I FaceTime’d with my friend in New York, to open a belated Christmas present that he sent. At the end of the call I was beginning to feel a bit worse for wear again. I curled up on the sofa again and that was the end of my productive day. As the girls were at mum’s, I didn’t need to turn out for them so I just waited for Chris to get home. As he knew I wasn’t feeling very well, he came back with a bunch of flowers again – this time pink roses.

The evening was spent with Chris, snuggled up in front of the tv. We headed to bed fairly early as I’d obviously lost a lot of sleep the night before. I slept incredibly soundly and since Chris was at work in the morning and the kids weren’t there, I managed to sleep on until 11.30am. When I did get up, I was feeling better again. I had parcels to wrap, in order to post and it was a rush to get organised and get out of the house. I had to call at the Post Office and then at my mum’s, all before picking the girls up from school. When we got home, it was time to make dinner – Turkey and Bacon Hotpot for Chris and I, along with whatever the kids had. I then cracked on with Olivia’s cake, baking and decorating for majority of the evening – mostly with Megan’s help, at least until she had to go to bed. Eventually I had to call it a night and head to bed myself.

On Friday the girls and I got up and dressed, Chris headed out to work. I had numerous jobs to get done that morning including post office, shopping, parcel collection etc. Once all those things were done I had to head home and get some things around the house done. I had some lunch and finished off Olivia’s dress, all before heading out to pick up Amy and Liv. After letting Olivia open her birthday presents and see the cake, we settled in for the rest of the day – the girls picking to watch Peter Pan as their Disney task for the day. For dinner I made all three girls some fish fingers and chips, before eventually it was time for Olivia to go to bed. Chris arrived home from work and I made Spicy Chicken pasta for me, Chris and Amy and not long after that, Megan and Lily headed to bed too. Chris went upstairs to play on his computer and Amy and I spent the whole evening planning our Florida trip. By about midnight we were all knackered and headed to bed.

On Saturday morning, it was hard to get a lie-in. I heard the girls get up and while they were all very quiet, I heard noises every now and again, stirring me from sleep. In the end I got up and though we’d originally had a few things planned for the day, we actually did very little. The three girls dressed up in Disney fancy dress and for majority of the day they occupied themselves with various things. Amy and I spent the majority of the day just hanging out and chatting, while Chris spent time on his computer as well as going for his driving lesson. In the evening I made pizza for the girls and Boozy Beef with mushrooms (and rice) for me, Chris and Amy. Again Chris spent the evening on his computer and while Amy and I had intended to watch a movie, we never actually got around to it.

On Sunday morning, I slept a little longer but not much. The morning was fairly lazy, especially knowing Amy and Olivia were leaving at lunch time. We drove them to the train station and saw them off, popping to Asda afterwards as the girls had asked for a sandwich. We headed back home and when we got there we settled down to watch Alice in Wonderland. After that the girls had a bath and then had dinner. Once they were done, Lily played on the Xbox for a while and Megan did some blogging. When Lily was in bed, Megan went on the Xbox and she played on that till bed time too. Once they were both in bed, I tried to actually get some stuff done, but didn’t really get that far. I went for a bath and Chris kept me company, eventually swapping and having a bath himself. I went to read my book and when he got out, we both watched TV until heading to bed.

Like I said, it was a good week but for no particular reason. It was lovely to have Amy stay for the weekend, even if it does make the weekend go by so fast. Already into the next week of course and so far its been a little strange. Fingers crossed for some normality come tomorrow but I’ll let you know next week!

Disney Countdown – Days 72 to 66

January 25, 2015 by Bel

countdown

Monday (72) – Jan 19th – Play a Disney Game
Tuesday (71) – Jan 20th – Read a Disney book
Wednesday (70) – Jan 21st – Make Disney themed food
Thursday (69) – Jan 22nd – Make or Draw something Disney
Friday (68) – Jan 23rd – Watch a random Disney movie (Peter Pan)
Saturday (67) – Jan 24th – Dress up Disney
Sunday (66) – Jan 25th– Watch Alice in Wonderland

Right now I’m sat with the girls, watching Alice in Wonderland. It’s that time of the week that I round up our Disney tasks, meaning we’re yet another week nearer to Florida. As of today we’re 9 and a half weeks and I still can’t really believe it!

This week we started off with “play a disney game”. As we’d already played a board game the day before, the girls picked an Xbox game, but surprisingly not Disney Infinity. This time its actually Disneyland Adventures which is a Kinnect game which allows the girls to walk around Disneyland Paris. They love it and spent all evening on it – not to mention several other evenings too. On Tuesday the girls were with their dad but when they came home we had to read Disney. We enjoyed yet another chapter of Never Girls, still on the second book. On Wednesday the girls were staying at my mum’s so I’d agreed to tackle Disney themed food by myself. This was largely because I had Olivia’s cake to make and it was going to be Toy Story themed. Sadly I wasn’t very well and didn’t actually manage to make a start on it to the next day. Thursday was make something Disney and since I still had the cake to finish, Megan came to help me with it as doing her task. She helped with the Sheriff badge, the belt and just generally moral support. On Friday, Amy and Olivia arrived. We showed Olivia her finished cake and she seemed pretty pleased with it. We also had the task of watch a random Disney movie and the girls picked Peter Pan, which they all sat nicely to watch together. On Saturday it was dress up Disney (as you may have seen from my 52 Project photo) and all three girls had fun doing that too. In the afternoon they even did some Disney jigsaws, even though that was nothing to do with a task. Finally on Sunday, after Amy and Olivia had left, the girls and I settled down to watch Alice in Wonderland (that’s now). It’s been a good week and I find myself looking forward to whatever the next Disney task may be!

2014 in Review – The Cakes

January 3, 2015 by Bel

As part of my round up for 2014, I wanted to recap on the cakes I’ve made this year. In May I did a sort of mid-year round up, but this is for the complete year. Though I’ve actually made far more than the cakes pictured below, these are the key cakes of 2014.

Though I did make a fairly simple cake for my sister’s birthday in February, March was really the first time I got busy. What with Lily, Amy and Chris all having a birthday in March, it was pretty crazy. Lily’s was my first and also one of the most important in the whole year. She was massively into Frozen (and still is) so that was the theme of her cake. Only 9 days later, it was Amy’s birthday and as I’ve always wanted to make her a Peter Pan cake, this is what I did. The three tiers made this the biggest cake of the year. It was a pretty impressive cake. Less than a week later, it was Chris’ birthday and I was pretty much caked out. As such he got a very simple Minion cake but he was happy nonetheless.

After a very brief break, my mum’s birthday came next in April. There was really no specific theme I could think of for my mum, so instead just asked what flavour she’d like. Having requested something with cream, I put my mind to something she’d love and came up with a Tiramisu cake. This as a huge hit and I’ve had several requests to make it since – most recently a few days after Christmas. Next in April was Erika’s birthday, though her party was technically in May. All I really had to go on was the fact she liked sweets, so I made a cake that somewhat looked like a bowl with sweets in it. My birthday was next but luckily I didn’t have to make my own cake as Nat did it instead. Good job too, given the theme (NSFW), as I”m not sure I would have pulled it off as well as she did! However only a week or so after mine, came my brother’s birthday. Since he was having a superhero party, I made him a superhero themed cake!

Only a few weeks after my brother’s birthday, it was Harry’s 1st birthday. While I don’t usually make cakes for other people’s kids, it was Harry’s 1st and that made it special (he’s also going to be my Godson). I really had no idea what a one year old would like so I searched around Pinterest till I came up with the idea of building blocks. It was a bit of a rush job but I think Harry’s cake turned out okay in the end. Luckily I managed a bit of a break then, at least until the following month. Even then the cake I made for my friend Chris, was a bit of break from the norm. His wife Hollie, suggested a cake that had been circulating its way around Facebook. Always up for a challenge, I figured I’d give it a go! Though the original cake had been Maltesers and M&M’s, I opted for Maltesers and Smarties – this was largely because nowhere I went had the smaller packs of M&M’s and I didn’t give myself very long to search! It turned out pretty good and seemed to wow everyone at Chris’ birthday party. Finally, I genuinely got a break – this time from between July to November. Then, amidst a heap of sewing, I had to make Nat a birthday cake. Sadly I can’t believe I never actually got around to blogging about her murder mystery, but we had fun with a fairytale theme. As her character in the murder mystery was Red Riding Hood, I decided to theme her cake the same. Megan actually helped me with the cake, solely making the Red Riding Hood figure on the top!

That brings me to the last cake of the year, which was actually for Megan’s birthday. Still bogged down with sewing, murder mystery planning and of course Christmas, Megan’s cake was a bit of a rush. Luckily for me, she’d enjoyed helping with Nat’s cake and had wanted to help with her own. Settling on a fairly simple Harry Potter cake theme, Megan actually made all the items on top of the cake (bar the scarf which I added as a surprise once she’d gone to bed). I made and iced the cake myself and once Megan was in bed, put all the elements together so at least the finished look would be a surprise for her.

While this coming year I will definitely be cutting down on the amount of cakes I make, I also know I will have more time to fiddle so I’m looking forward to developing more skills. With Megan be interested in helping, it also makes it feel a bit more enjoyable for me. Megan definitely has artistic talent that I do not possess!
